Justly Prudent seeks to expose systemic discrimination in local police department

Today, we stepped onto the legal battlefield to seek justice for a police officer who dedicated her life to serving and protecting residents of Prince George's County for more than two decades.

Today, we filed an amended civil rights complaint on behalf of Sonya Lancaster Zollicoffer, a decorated former Lieutenant with the Prince George's County Police Department. After serving the community for over two decades, Ms. Zollicoffer rose through the ranks, overcoming systemic racism and sexism, to become one of the few African-American female lieutenants in the Prince George’s County Police Department.

According to the amended complaint alleges that, after Ms. Zollicoffer questioned the mysterious disappearance of several minutes of body-worn camera footage in an excessive force case she was investigating, the PGCPD stripped Ms. Zollicoffer of her investigative duties and launched an unprecedented internal affairs investigation against her. Despite her exemplary record, Ms. Zollicoffer was punished for seeking transparency and accountability, and her amended complaint exposes the deep-seated issues of systemic racism and retaliation in the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Ms. Zollicoffer now fights to restore her name and hold those responsible for the wrongful disciplinary actions taken against her.
